Tech Conferences 2025: 5 PR Pitching Tips
Whether you’re attending a technology conference or setting one up for your own brand or client, they’re a great opportunity to generate brand buzz and win earned media coverage – if you know how to target and attract media attention. That’s why we put together these takeaways – gleaned from the 2024 State of the Media Report: Tech Edition – on what reporters want and need from their technology PR partners:
- Master your press releases. The press release is perennially popular among journalists. Of the technology journalists surveyed in our report, 77% said they wanted to receive news or press release announcements from PR pros. Seventy-two percent also named press releases as their most useful asset for generating content. Make sure your press release gets in front of the right audiences by distributing it on tech-focused channels and including a link to your release when reaching out to tech reporters.
- Give journalists multimedia. The adage of a picture being worth a thousand words rings true for tech reporters – 76% of them used images supplied by PR professionals in their content in the last year. Among other multimedia elements journalists use most – videos (think user videos or video testimonials) and data visualizations (think infographics that illustrate key product benefits or proof points).
- Follow up your pitch. Giving a tech journalist a nudge on one of your pitches is fine, but don’t overdo it. Sixty-eight percent said PR pros can follow up on a pitch, though the vast majority recommend doing so only once.
- Relevance is key. Before pitching a tech journalist, it’s crucial to ensure your story fits their beat, so make sure you’ve done your research. Sixty-nine percent of journalists say PRs pros can make their jobs easier if they understand their target audience and what they find relevant. (Pro tip: Create a targeted media list to keep track of relevant journalists you want to reach out to and craft personalized pitches for.)
- Connect journalists with experts. Speaking to industry experts is the second most useful thing PR practitioners can do for tech journalists to help them generate content ideas. Given how upcoming tech conferences offer ample opportunity for in-person interviews, setting up these discussions can help you win favor with reporters. If you can offer an exclusive, even better: 55% of reporters say they want story exclusives from their PR partners.
